JA Ghana’s 5th Swiss Re Startup Academy takes off

Team Breakfast time, Winners of Swiss Re Startup Academy June 2021

Ghana’s premier bi-annual entrepreneurship bootcamp, Swiss Re Startup Academy was held from June 21-25,2021 at Hotel Casarere East Legon.

The fifth cohort of the 5-day lively and vivid entrepreneurship bootcamp unfolded in well-springs of fun, exciting, immersive, rigorous, enlightening and delectable moments with 30 Swiss Re startup Academy Participants, Swiss Re foreign and local mentors, volunteers and the entire JA team! As is done bi-annually, participants were selected from tertiary institutions across the length and breadth of Ghana, some of which include UDS, UPSA, KNUST, UG, UMAT, etc. Participants were trained through intensive input sessions on Developing a business idea, Pitching, building a Business Model Canvas, sales and marketing, Customer Need, Solution, USP, financial modelling, etc.

In response to COVID-19, this year’s cohort, was not business as usual. The bootcamp saw a blend of in-person and virtual sessions where mentors from Swiss Re and Aiducation joined in virtually for presentations and further engagements with participants. Given the concerted and thoroughgoing nature of the boot camp, participants underwent personal check-in and mentoring sessions with their assigned local and Swiss Re mentors. Participants demonstrated effective learning, teamwork, communication and growth throughout the entire five-day period as they made applausive and awe-inspiring presentations on the final day of the boot-camp. The Camp ended in cocktail of emotions as robust and scalable business ideas were developed, as well as lasting connections and friendships built amongst participants, coordinators and mentors. Congratulations to Team Breakfast Time who emerged winners at the end of their presentations(featured in photo above).

JA Ghana in collaboration with Swiss Reinsurance and Aiducation International, through the Swiss Re Startup Academy, are empowering young students who would otherwise only rely on government employability, with competitive entrepreneurial skills to thrive as innovators and originators in this economically fast-paced world.

Appreciation goes to our partners, Swiss Reinsurance and Aiducation for the investment in Ghana’s entrepreneurial capital through interventions for young people all over the country.
