On 19 September 2025, the Akyem Tumfa community came alive with celebration, music and pride as nine young people graduated from the Akyem Tumfa Vocational Training Programme. For six months, these youth, eight women and one man including four young mothers, journeyed from uncertain beginnings to becoming skilled artisans ready to shape brighter futures for themselves and their families.
The graduation durbar was a celebration of resilience and community spirit. Chiefs, elders, parents, artisans and local residents all gathered to honour the achievements of the trainees. Guests were amazed at the beautifully designed clothes showcased by the graduates, a powerful demonstration of their hard work and creativity. Certificates were awarded to the graduates, and special citations were presented to local artisans who dedicated their time and expertise as mentors.
The highlight of the day came through heartfelt testimonies from the graduates, who shared how the programme had given them confidence, dignity and renewed hope. One by one, they spoke of overcoming challenges and finding purpose. For many, this was more than training; it was a lifeline.
In an inspiring act of solidarity, the community raised over GHC 12,000 (USD 1,000) during the ceremony to support the graduates as they take their next steps, whether launching small businesses, pursuing further training or seeking employment opportunities. This collective support affirmed the value of the programme and its potential to spark wider transformation.
The training journey began with a Boot Camp focused on self-awareness, leadership, entrepreneurship, financial literacy and goal-setting. This was followed by six months of apprenticeship under the guidance of three master artisans. By the end of the programme, graduates were not only producing high-quality garments but also equipped with the knowledge to manage small businesses and chart sustainable career paths.
For most participants, life before the programme was filled with uncertainty. Many were out of school, unemployed and struggling to make ends meet. Today, they stand as empowered role models in their community, proving that with opportunity and mentorship, young people can thrive.

The Akyem Tumfa Vocational Training Programme, made possible by JA Ghana in partnership with the PepsiCo Foundation, is more than a skills project; it is a model of empowerment. It demonstrates how combining vocational training with entrepreneurship education and strong community engagement can tackle unemployment, build livelihoods and ignite hope.
The success story of Akyem Tumfa reminds us that when young people are given the right tools, they can rise above challenges and become changemakers in their communities. What began with nine determined graduates has now become a beacon of possibility for many more across Ghana.
This is not just the story of a few young people. It is the story of transformation, solidarity and the limitless potential of Ghana’s youth.
