On the 24th of March 2023, JA Ghana, in partnership with Prudential Life Insurance, marked Global Money Week with a Teen Talk session themed, “Building Financially Responsible Students: The Need for Financial Literacy Inclusion in Basic Education”. The event was graced by the Ablekuma West Municipal Director of Education, Mr. Christian Julius Aforlah, CEO of Prudential Life Insurance, Dr. Hazel Berrard Awuah as well as JA Ghana’s Executive Director, Mr. Abeiku Greene. Students from Dansoman 1 Basic School, Dansoman Community School, Tunga Islamic Basic School, and Dansoman 4 Basic School participated as panelists in the session as part of efforts to amplify the voices of the youth on economic issues.
During the event, the students shared their experiences during the COVID 19 lockdown period and how they coped with the financial hardships they faced. They also gave insights on how they manage their finances and save for the future, exhibiting a high level of financial literacy.
Mr. Aforlah expressed his support for financial literacy amongst the youth and commended JA Ghana for their efforts in empowering children to be financially literate at an early age. He said,
“I’m amazed at how knowledgeable the students are about money management. We need to continue to empower them with financial literacy skills and ensure they are equipped to manage their finances.”
The panelists also emphasized the importance of financial literacy in basic education, with one student from Dansoman Community School saying, “It’s important to learn about money management so we can be responsible with our money and make informed decisions.”
The event provided a platform for students to share their thoughts on financial literacy and encouraged stakeholders to prioritize financial education in basic education. JA Ghana and Prudential Life Insurance have shown their commitment to empowering youth with the necessary financial literacy skills, and the partnership with the education ministry will go a long way in ensuring that more students are equipped to manage their finances and make sound financial decisions.
