Unlocking Potential: How We Transformed Newmont Ghana’s Corporate Goals into Youth Opportunities

In the challenging world of STEM education, good intentions aren’t enough. Organizations need a strategic partner who can truly transform vision into impact – and that’s where we come in.

The New Futures for Girls Leadership Camp emerged from our commitment to addressing a critical issue: the underrepresentation of women in technical and leadership roles. We’ve seen how traditional gender roles consistently hinder women from exploring their full potential, especially in STEM fields traditionally dominated by men.

When Newmont Ghana approached us with a vision to change this narrative, we knew we could help. With women making up only 35% of STEM students globally, and a mere 3% in information and communication technologies, we saw an opportunity to make a real difference.

The COVID-19 pandemic could have derailed everything. But at JA Ghana, we don’t just adapt – we innovate. We quickly transformed the two-day in-person camp into a dynamic virtual experience. Our Zoom calls became platforms of possibility, complete with unexpected background sounds of roosters and goats, proving that meaningful connection transcends physical boundaries.

Our approach goes beyond traditional training. We equipped participants with crucial skills:

  • Personal branding and self-presentation
  • Emotional intelligence and feedback reception
  • Vision boarding and goal setting
  • Leadership and career planning
  • Digital world navigation

Aligned with Sustainable Development Goals, we created a potential pipeline of talented women for technical industries. Over three cohorts, we reached 124 young women from 30 high schools and 7 universities, with 88% of our resource persons coming directly from Newmont staff.

The impact has been transformative:

  • 90% of students expressed interest in mining careers
  • Over 70% reported increased self-confidence
  • 100% of participants would recommend our program

Elizabeth Laryea, one of our participants, shared, “I learnt a lot about how females can persevere and succeed in the mining industry. After the session on vision board, I now know myself better and am clear about my future goals.”

We don’t just run programs – we create transformative experiences that align perfectly with corporate missions. Newmont Ghana’s success is proof that with JA Ghana, your vision becomes their opportunity.
